Gov. Larry Hogan has appointed Carol Beatty as secretary for the Maryland Department of Disabilities. With more than 20 years of leadership at The Arc of Howard County, Beatty served as executive director of the nonprofit organization, which serves more than 750 children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families, providing advocacy and support services.

“Ms. Beatty’s appointment comes at an opportune time in Maryland for people with disabilities,” said Cristine Marchand, executive director of The Arc Maryland. “As Maryland embarks on new and sweeping employment initiatives, Carol’s expertise and passion for employment for all people with disabilities will serve the department’s constituents well.”

The Arc of Howard County President Ed Wilson has appointed Susan Haynes to serve as acting executive director until a replacement for Beatty is found. Haynes is currently associate executive director of administration and has been at The Arc since 1989.

Manekin LLC Senior Vice President and Director of Development Cole Schnorf, a past president of The Arc and parent of a daughter who receives services from the nonprofit, will chair the search committee charged with identifying candidates for Beatty’s successor, Wilson said.

Other members of the search committee are Haynes; Vice President Dorothy Plantz; Board Member Pam Guzzone; Treasurer Annette Hinkle; Tiffany Mason, who is supported by The Arc; and The Arc of Carroll County Executive Director Don Rowe.

Additional committee members may be added at a later date, according to Wilson, who will serve as an ex-officio member.
