With studios in Annapolis, Severna Park and Crofton, Bikram Yoga has been helping ever-increasing numbers of area residents grow stronger, physically and mentally.
Emily and Philip Vendemmia opened Severna Park Bikram Yoga in November 2007. At that time, the studio offered 13 classes a week, and there were two teachers on staff. In 2009, they opened a second location in Annapolis. Then, in 2011, they celebrated the opening of their most recent location in Crofton. Between the three studios, there are now more than 70 class times on the weekly schedule, and there are 15 part-time and full-time instructors on staff.
“After our students practice with us, even after a month or two, they can feel their bodies changing in so many positive ways, and they are willing to travel for it,” said Vendemmia. “One cannot get the therapeutic benefit of our class at a local gym. We have three locations to make it as convenient as possible for our students to attend class frequently. Our locations have allowed us to serve not only Anne Arundel County, but Prince George’s, Howard and Calvert counties as well.”
The Vendemmias both come from a customer service background. “We place much importance on the happiness of our students,” said Philip Vendemmia. “Some students can be very nervous about attending their first yoga class, so it is very important for each student to have a good experience in our lobby, as well as the yoga room.”
All instructors are committed to their yoga practice, said Vendemmia, who practices Bikram yoga six or more times a week. “Each teacher takes at least five classes a week because learning through our own practice is the best continuing education we have as yoga teachers.”
