The Women’s Giving Circle (WGC) of Howard County is accepting applications for its residential summer camp, Journey 2015. The camp will include 25 girls entering eighth or ninth grade in fall 2015. Maryland Leadership Workshops (MLW) will operate Journey, as it has since its inception.

The WGC is an organization of women philanthropists dedicated to addressing the needs of women and girls in Howard County. It is a fund of the Community Foundation of Howard County. MLW has been providing leadership training programs for middle and high school students in Maryland for more than 55 years.

Journey will run from Sunday, July 12, to Saturday, July 18, at Washington College in Chestertown, in Kent County on Maryland’s Upper Eastern Shore. The girls will live in the college dorms, eat in the college cafeteria and experience a collegiate atmosphere during the week-long program.

Journey program components will include the following:

  • Workshops on empowerment and motivation, communication, decision making skills, group dynamics, self-awareness, goal setting and conflict resolution
  • Small and large group projects for girls to apply and get feedback on their leadership and interpersonal skills
  • One-on-one interactions between staff and girls to address specific areas of growth for the individual and identify an action plan for post-site implementation
  • Recreational activities such as swimming and athletics and team-building games and activities, including a Confidence Course

Applicants should have some previous experience in leading her peers, a willingness to try new experiences in a safe environment and a desire to serve her community.

The camp will be restricted to girls who are living in Howard County and now attending seventh and eighth grade. The cost of the camp is $730 if paying by check, $755 if paying by credit card. Applications can be obtained at www.mlw.org and will also be available in guidance offices at local middle schools.
