What is the purpose of Leadership Howard County (LHC)?

Our goal is to create an active network of informed, concerned citizens to guide the future and growth of our community through the 21st century. By providing the opportunity to learn about and explore the key issues in Howard County, LHC intends to develop a diverse group of informed community trustees who can create collaborative partnerships to further common goals.

How do you participate in LHC?

LHC begins with an initial 10-month program year that focuses on the regional issues including economic development, health and aging, criminal law and public safety, education, human services and housing, government, and roles and responsibilities of board membership. Participants meet monthly in various locations to explore the critical issues facing our community.

Applications are reviewed, and applicants are selected by LHC’s Selection Committee. The committee evaluates each applicant based on the merits of a written application and interview.

How are participants selected?

LHC seeks representation from a cross-section of the community — business, labor, education, the arts, faith communities, government, community-based organizations and nonprofit groups.

The Selection Committee considers the applicant’s overall level of accomplishment and desire to extend his or her impact on the community. Also considered are the diverse skills and experience the candidate would contribute to the class and a demonstrated commitment to ongoing education or self-improvement.
