CRTC Tabs Elstner as Interim Director
The Chesapeake Regional Tech Council (CRTC) Board of Directors has announced Board Member and Treasurer John Elstner as its interim executive director. The appointment follows the departure of Kris Valerio Shock for a position in the private sector.
Elstner joined the CRTC board in 2004 and has served as treasurer through five board presidents. He also was the founding CEO of the Chesapeake Innovation Center and, since 2006, has served in interim CXO roles for various companies.
Turf Valley Adds New Government, Education Account Exec
Donald Kropfelder has joined the sales department at Turf Valley as government and education account executive. A 27-year veteran of experience in sales and marketing, Kropfelder worked at Next Day Customers as a marketing and communications consultant.
HCGH Announces Board Changes
Howard County General Hospital (HCGH) has announced the following officers have joined the hospital’s board of trustees: Brian McGowan, former senior vice president at W.R. Grace, as chair; Paul Skalny, partner in the law practice of Davis, Agnor, Rapaport & Skalny, as board vice chair; and David Condron, member at DCMM & Associates, who will remain as treasurer. They will serve two-year terms.
AACC Prof Garners STEM Award
Alycia Marshall, chair of Anne Arundel Community College’s (AACC) mathematics department, received a top national honor in the science, technology, mathematics and engineering (STEM) field when INSIGHT into Diversity magazine named her one of 100 Inspiring Women in STEM. She was cited for her leadership in mentoring, teaching and encouraging students to major in a STEM subject.
Meachum New President at ACS
Thomas Meachum, a partner with the Columbia law firm of Carney, Kelehan, Bresler, Bennett & Scherr, was named president of the Association of Community Services of Howard County (ACS). Previously, Meachum served as president-elect, secretary and chair of the fundraising committee for ACS.
Colliers Names Trio
Colliers International has named Lori Roeder vice president and property manager, Kelli Rivera as property manager and Jennifer Rogers as marketing coordinator. Previously, Roeder was a senior property manager for MacKenzie Management Co., Rivera was a property manager for Cushman & Wakefield and Rogers was a marketing manager for Shore Premier Finance.
Local Law Firms Merge
Linda Ostovitz and partner Fred Silverstein are merging their law firm, Silverstein & Ostovitz, with Offit Kurman to enhance the family law division of Offit Kurman. The deal will be complete when Ostovitz and Silverstein move their offices from Ellicott City to Maple Lawn by early August.
AACC Names Two New Academic Deans
Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) has named Karen Cook dean for the School of Business and Law, and Bruce Bowman as dean of the School of Sciences and Technology. Until her appointment, Cook was director of AACC’s Legal Studies Institute, professor of law and the college’s federal compliance officer; Bowman comes to AACC from LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas, where he was dean of the School of Business.
Schrider Elected 120th Chair of MBA
Daniel Schrider, president and CEO of Sandy Spring Bank, has been elected 2015–16 chairman of the Maryland Bankers Association (MBA). During his 12-month term of office, Schrider will lead the MBA during its first year of a three-year strategic plan.
Cohee Promoted at Champion
Long-time Champion Realty Title Attorney Edward Cohee has been named president of the company’s affiliated title company, Champion Realty Title. He has provided legal services to the company for more than two decades and brings 40 years of experience to the position.
Kuc Named Howard County Solicitor
Gary Kuc has been sworn in as Howard County solicitor. Kuc has served as a senior assistant county solicitor since 2009, and has advised and counseled county officials and employees on local, state and federal laws.
Kittleman Appoints Caldwell
Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman has selected Jim Caldwell as administrator of the Office of Community Sustainability, which was expanded at the start of the Kittleman administration to include agriculture, infrastructure and economic sustainability, in addition to the environment. Caldwell had been acting administrator of the office since December.
Ding Appointed to Gov’s Commission
Hung-bin Ding, associate professor of management at Loyola University Maryland’s Sellinger School of Business and Management, was appointed to the Maryland Governor’s Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs. The commission assists the governor and state agencies in responding to the needs and concerns of Maryland citizens with ancestral heritage in Asian and Pacific Rim countries.
HHF Names Butler Chair
Howard Hospital Foundation (HHF) has named Scott Butler chair of the board. Butler has served on the foundation board for the last four years and has chaired the annual HHF Golf Benefit Classic, as well as served on Planned Giving Committee.
Sheckells Appointed ABC Treasurer
Anita Sheckells has been appointed to the board of directors as treasurer for the Baltimore Chapter of the Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC). Sheckells, a director with KatzAbosch and vice president of the law firm’s board, is a co-founder of its Construction Services Group.
NextLOGiK Hires Software Developers
Columbia-based NextLOGiK has hired two software developers dedicated to expanding and refining NextLOGiK’s flagship product, CompWALK. They are Darrell Booker, who has a background in mobile-application and web site development; and Shawn Freeman, who has experience in C#, Net programming and Android application development.
Patel Named Director of ACEC/MD
Harish Patel, executive vice president of EBA Engineering, has been named a director of the American Council of Engineering Companies/Maryland (ACEC/MD). A graduate of ACEC/MD’s Leadership Program, Patel has been active in ACEC/MD for 15 years.
Slades III, IV in Tandem at Edward Jones
Harry Slade, III, a financial adviser for the financial services firm Edward Jones, in Ellicott City, has been appointed to the firm’s hiring team. One of Slade’s first moves was to hire his son, Harry Slade IV, as a financial adviser.
Columbia Bank Promotes Mueller
Todd Mueller has been promoted to branch manager at the Ellicott City office of The Columbia Bank. He previously was the branch manager of the bank’s Gateway Plaza office. Mueller will be responsible for developing new business opportunities and running day-to-day operations.
ACS Adds Zellweger
The Association of Community Services of Howard County (ACS) has hired Jessica Zellweger as events coordinator. She brings to the position nearly 15 years of experience, marketing services to private industry, government agencies and human services agencies.
Cavanaugh Joins Purple Cherry
Rachel Cavanaugh has joined Purple Cherry Architects, of Annapolis, as a professional intern architect. In addition to her experience, which includes designing government, health care and education facilities, her understanding of 2-D and 3-D architectural design software will provide added support to the studio.
Walsh Part of LHC 2015 Premier Class
impactHR has announced that Senior Consultant Karen Walsh recently graduated from Leadership Howard County’s (LHC) 2015 Premier Class. Walsh will continue working on her LHC Community Impact Project, which is a team effort to tie the upcoming launch of the Maryland Chapter of Conscious Capitalism with Columbia’s 50th Anniversary Celebration in 2017.

Network 2000 has elected Traci Barnett as president. Barnett is president and CEO of the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland, and has served Network 2000 as president-elect, treasurer, chair of the finance committee and co-chair of the mentoring committee.
