The Arc of Howard County and the Howard County Autism Society recently co-sponsored their annual Legislative Breakfast to update county and state officials on issues of concern to people with developmental disabilities and their families. The breakfast included remarks by self-advocates who spoke of their experiences living and working in Howard County.
Hannah Saltzman, 23, holds two jobs and is “interested in learning new things,” she told the group. Her goal is full-time employment; Geoff Savage spoke of “still waiting for his own place” after years of sharing an apartment. Both are individuals served by The Arc of Howard County.
Theresa Ballinger of the Howard County Autism Society reminded the crowd of the rising prevalence of autism. “Behind every number is an individual,” she said.
