The final edition of the Bowie Blade-News will be delivered to residents on Thursday, July 29, according to a report given to the city council by Bowie City Manager Al Lott.

Lott said he received a call from Timothy Thomas, senior vice president of business development at Baltimore Sun Media Group, informing Lott of the news. Thomas cited lack of local advertisers as the reason, according to Lott. The Capital-Gazette will maintain a Bowie news section on its web site.

The decision to close the Blade-News less than two months after Tribune Publishing, the parent company of the Baltimore Sun Media Group, was purchased by hedge fund Alden for $633 million.

The Blade-News began publication in February 1980, when the Bowie Blade and the Bowie News newspapers merged.
